Since they took me off seizure medication for my video EEG in June, I've averaged 15-25 simple partial seizures per month. My last seizures was on December 17th, 2012, just two days before my right medial temporal lobectomy. I figured that I may have some seizures the first few days after surgery, since they messed with my brain. The first couple days I felt like I had a seizure coming on, but never actually had one. I've only felt that way once or twice since leaving the hospital (after only a 4-night stay). I have not had a single seizure in over 2 months! I had never gone more than a month without a seizure, since I began having seizures at age 30. Overall the surgery has been a huge success for me so far.
Most of the side-effects I have had are nearly gone. I haven't had a headache for several days. For several weeks the headaches have only lasted from a few short seconds to a couple minutes. The pain in my right TMJ is improving, and I am opening my mouth a little wider each week. My senses of smell and taste are still altered. Basically I am relearning what most foods taste like, because they don't taste how they used to. The exception seems to be pepper and spicy foods - they still taste how I remember. I first noticed problems with facial recognition when I was a teenager. That problem seems to have gotten a little worse with age. I'm not sure if it's worse since surgery, but it sure isn't better. People I've known for quite awhile I can recognize, but people that were hired not long before my surgery, or since my surgery, I have a difficult time recognizing after even a few minutes. I have a good ear, so I try to learn voices, and memorize the few basic features that may help me (like body build, and hair color). Overall I'm very grateful that I've been seizure free this long. I'm looking forward to driving in the near future and
